Catharsis, 36" x 48" Oil on canvas
‘Catharsis’ is an adjunct piece created during the process of painting the Stability Series.  Using the left over paint from each spine, I continued the conversation and exploration around my back injury.  It is the back-story to the series (pun intended) and explores questions ranging from the cycles of life to putting ‘my spine’ on display.  I am not sure if it’s complete, and perhaps the piece will have more to say after the series has been shown.

Grasping Light, Again

The process of creating a similar painting years later allows one to not only see their growth as an artist, but also as a being.  Throughout this painting I would touch in on the painting that inspired this one;  the scents of the ocean, the hippie walks of life in OB, and the original unknown that seeped out of me onto canvas.  Like this painting, at this moment my life is more complex than it was five years ago.  New tools and experiences have allowed me to discover different depth and voice on and off the canvas.  The painting created its own internal check in moments and self reflections throughout the process.  The figure represents a less protected leap and grasp for new light as a heavy fallen structure lies dissolving behind.  Out of the darkness of confusion and unknown comes a leap into the light of ones own skin.  Pieces of the background intertwine with the skin as lessons, stories and feelings not to be forgotten, and naturally take unknown form into the new shape we are.

Ida & Pingala

What started as an exploration of the Ida and Pingala Nadis (passages in the left and right nostrils for Prana or life force to reach the chakras), became the capturing of a beautiful and intriguing woman.  Orchids, an ambiguous portrait, line, the natural settling of oil paint and color give way to express both the movement of life energy as well as the light and dark elements of a friend.  The choice of flowers and a portrait in the painting attempt to put the onlooker in tune with vital force of life involved within the nostrils.  More attention to the idea of breath was involved with leaving white negative space and bare canvas showing (often something I struggle to achieve).  The hand connects the piece to both the delicacy and fragility of life as well recipient of the painting, while the hair, roots and leaves resemble the power and strength.  As in many of my works it was a process of seeking balance, message and aesthetic satisfaction.

The Tree

30" x 40" Oil on canvas

“The Tree” has furthered my understanding of a love to combine worlds through art.  No matter the dimension, place, memory, time, or emotion, art allows us to combine worlds of every kind.  It allows us to see that there is only one “world” and our imagination/spirit is the universe that holds it all.
This piece is a combination of dreams, a childhood aura of exploration, and ones journey to bring youthful spirit into dreams coming true.  This work of art is meant to honor our inner child’s dreams and aspirations.  More, it is to honor a man who made his dreams comes true.  He was a boy from Israel climbing trees and listening to his spirit of adventure.  He continued to listen and this voice taught him to flip, fly, stand on his hands, and heave his body all about.  With discipline, his childhood inclinations and spirit would be the catalyst in forming his life.  Through competing those flips against the world, to competing his magnified love for climbing trees in the States {and a free education}, the boy became a man.  The man was not done climbing trees, flipping and flying – although those are ‘things of child’s play.’  He found an outlet in performance, on the Las Vegas Strip no less.  He could get paid to climb on a tree!!  He could make a living, support a family, and live his dreams amongst others also never giving up on their dreams.
This painting is a birthday present to a man turning 40 from his brilliant and beautiful wife.  It’s a gift for a man I admire and honor.  He is a man as comfortable standing on his hands as standing on his legs, though I am pretty sure he prefers the hands. Even when trying to give him something great and worthy, I am still taught by this humble, brilliant man.  It is in this one world we show up naked with no thing but body, spirit, consciousness and choice.  This one world is where we combine these gifts of nature to be made or make something.  I choose to make something.  Anyone want to join?

"Yesterday"

Oil on canvas, 30''x40'' ...inspiration stemmed from the Beatles song "Yesterday" - it embodies our growth from the easy game of love, youth and naivety into a sometimes overwhelming world. In the same sense we get to choose the world we see and the ways we "hide away." Believing in yesterday becomes a way we can remain in our youthful understandings and dreams while existing amongst resistance to that nature.

Sublimation is taking an experience, impulse, or desire from the inside and expressing it externally.  This process is not complete until it is seen or heard.  Here, I desire the pulse that allows art to fully exist.  The conversation.
