“They are as much, if not more, about the iconology of the spine as they are about the physical and emotional pain of a back injury. A somatic holding, until the dis-ease ruptures. The paintings themselves reveal different responses/phases during the healing and process of recovery. I now understand them as documents of healing a broken spirit, manifested as/within lower back injury.
A pushing of myself, my body, beyond what I could hold. It’s something everyone can relate to; we all have a spine holding us up and/or together. In using a single brush for all the paintings, I explore the limiting, yet innovative drive around having one spine/one life to create the most of what we are given. I hope in viewing the pieces people can relate to both our connectedness as well as present the question, "what holds you up?” Oil on canvas, Various sizes, 11 of 24 |
